She Works Out Almost Every Day
Anna Kaiser, who has trained Shakira for years, revealed to E! News that her star client works out five days a week, and sometimes two-a-days when she needs to get into serious shape. "We alternate between strength and cardio intervals. Some days we do just cardio and then strength and some days we start with strength and then do cardio, we like to mix it up," Kaiser explained. "I want to make sure that she is improving her endurance so that she can go into a two-hour show and also has the strength and stamina to make it through a five-month tour. It's about making sure she gets a little bit of everything."
She Wears a Heart Monitor
Kaiser also told E! News that Shakira wears a heart monitor and uses it to set her workout goals, as it "keeps her the most focused." "Maintaining a certain heart rate for a prolonged period of time can help you burn more calories and fat while also improving your cardiovascular health," Chris Travers, MS, tells the Cleveland Clinic, which adds "it's also possible to overexert yourself, and a heart rate monitor can alert you to that danger, too."
Her Workouts Are Mostly Strength and Cardio
Kaiser revealed that Shakira's workouts alternate between strength and cardio intervals. "Some days we do just cardio and then strength and some days we start with strength and then do cardio, we like to mix it up," she told E! News. "I want to make sure that she is improving her endurance so that she can go into a two-hour show and also has the strength and stamina to make it through a five-month tour. It's about making sure she gets a little bit of everything."
She Actually Does Surfs
Shakira isn't just playing a surfer girl in her music video. She is one in real life. When she isn't exercising with Kaiser, you can find her out in the ocean hanging ten. "In addition to providing a good cardio workout (try paddling over waves and see how hard your heart pounds), surfing is a whole-body workout," reports the LA Times, which quotes Patrick Murphy, owner of Venice-based Learn to Surf LA, as saying that "paddling mostly works the upper back muscles and the deltoids (shoulder muscles)."
She Turns Her Phone Off
Shakira's secret to focusing on fitness and family? "Kaiser doesn't let me turn on my phone until I finish my workout and spend time with my kids," she revealed in an Instagram video. "It's easy to feel like work is never done when the email inbox is overflowing. Create boundaries by checking email at designated times – and definitely not first thing in the morning or on vacation," advises UW Health. "Too much time spent in front of a screen can mean less time being physically active. Get out and take a walk."
