Loveless has sometimes felt boxed in by the roles she was offered after Skins. “I’m not sure if Naomi typecast me,” she says. “I know I wouldn’t have had particular roles offered to me if I hadn’t done Skins, so I didn’t accept those ones. I wanted to wait and hold out for ones that were different. But to be fair, being a teenage girl/young woman gets you typecast. There are a few good roles here and there, but mostly they just want a moody teenager with an attitude, or an airhead.”

2. TV Dreams

Loveless had dreams of directing TV shows before she became an actress. “What I actually wanted to do as a kid was direct live TV – Top of the Pops or Blue Peter preferably,” she says. “I thought it would be the most fun job in the world. What made me want to act, what made me see how awesome film is, was a Film 4 trailer – a montage of different films, cut together with some fast, pumping track over the top. Film suddenly looked so crazy and exciting and I wanted to be a part of it. Those two minutes made a huge impact on me. Maybe I’m meant to be an editor!”

3. Humanitarian Causes

Loveless champions many humanitarian causes via her social media. “People who were in better physical and mental health were more likely to volunteer,” says Vanderbilt University sociologist Peggy Thoits. “And conversely, volunteer work was good for both mental and physical health. People of all ages who volunteered were happier and experienced better physical health and less depression.”

Loveless did theater for a rewarding challenge. “I find [with] acting I’m just more comfortable at it, so I wanted to go into theater as well because it’s completely different, it’s so challenging and so hard,” she says. “But the rewards are completely different and great as well. All I’m interested in is the characters and the writing. So, whether that’s in a play or a tv show or film, all that really matters to me is that the writing is good and that the character is a good character.”

5. Advice For Young Actors

Loveless wishes she could have given herself advice when she was starting out. “I’d tell myself to try as hard as I could at every take on every scene,” she says. “Never be lazy. To try, hard as it might be, to concentrate on the acting, and not worry about your appearance. I’d tell myself to listen to some, ignore many. You’ll know who. To be grateful. To not take “no” personally. To always be yourself, corny as that sounds. There’s a lot of pressure to look and act like everyone else. Your music taste is fine. You don’t have to like indie to be cool. You can stop pretending. You don’t have to be posh to fit in. You’ll find your space, and like-minded people.”

“I loved the EMM dress I wore for the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies premiere. So that felt quite amazing. And also the wind was really strong and that had a ribbon, and the photos just looked quite sort of old school and quite romantic, I think.”

Lewis was proud to portray a biracial character in 2015 film Beverley. “I really loved that it was about a mixed race young girl,” she says. “You know, you get a lot of movies, different narratives that kind of circulate around the 80s, Margaret Thatcher, etc. But to be of mixed race, that’s often not covered and to be a mixed-race girl it’s kind of like you don’t know where you stand in society. You’re still a teenager as well as dealing with all those other troubles anyway… I just thought it would be really great to live through that, and being mixed race myself, I faced issues like bullying and stuff when I was in school – about the color of my skin. So, I thought it would be interesting to share that story and try to become part of it.”

3. No Drama School

Lewis never formally trained as an actress, and got her role in Skins from an open audition. “I didn’t go to drama school,” she says. “I was one of those people who was quite stuck with that. When everyone else was applying for university, I did apply, but I wasn’t too bothered about it, because I knew that I didn’t want to go at that time. I think my plan was to save and travel and do some volunteer work. I knew I wanted to eventually do a degree in media and cultural studies, which is what I’m doing now. But at the time I was just thinking of maybe traveling for a year and sort of deciding over that period what I really wanted to do.”

4. Vegan Meals

Lewis enjoys plant-based vegan meals. "You can be overweight and be a vegan; you can be malnourished and be a vegan," says cardiologist Jeffrey Soble, MD. "Whatever your diet choice, you have to know which foods to avoid and which foods to seek out... Refined grains, sweets and junk food are troublemakers for everyone, not just vegans. And vegans and nonvegans alike can fall into the habit of making these items the mainstays of their diet."

5. Media Studies

Lewis studied media and cultural studies alongside acting. “In a way, I find it’s quite separate from acting – not separate from the industry, but from acting itself,” she says. “The two can mesh, but now it’s like two separate things, which is nice, because it breaks things up. At this age, you’re getting jobs in dribs and drabs, at other times you’re working non-stop. So, it’s nice to have something separate to work on in my own time. I’m just enjoying learning as well. A lot of it is theory-based and to do with different cultures, so it’s nice to be doing that well."

Sydney has been water skiing since she was a toddler. “The moment I could walk, my mom put me on what’s called a U-board to learn how to ski,” she told Women’s Health. “I remember that whenever we would go by the docks of my grandma’s or my cousin’s house, I’d wave. I felt so cool because I could take off one hand. That’s my earliest memory of skiing, but I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember. It’s my favorite.” How does it help her achieve her amazing body? “It’s a lot of upper body strength, it’s balance, it’s core, it’s legs—you get tired really fast,” she says. “I see such a change in my body after an entire summer of [skiing]. My arms are stronger, more sculpted. My abs are rock solid. But I never look at it as a workout because it is so much fun,” she said.

Sydney mixes up her exercise routine, but likes to get workouts over with early in the day. “I like to work out in the morning, so I’ll either go for a run or I’ll go to Solidcore,” says Sydney. The high-intensity, low-impact Pilates-inspired workout “makes me feel so strong, but also elongated,” Sydney said about her sweat sessions. “I feel so good afterwards.”

Self-Care

Sydney engages in self-care activities. “I love to paint, and I love to read,” she said. “Those are the activities that are just for me.” One Harvard study published in Social Science & Medicine found that people who read books regularly had a 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years than those who weren't readers or who read periodicals.

Mariana relies on old-school strength training to keep her body toned. “Training till failure instead of reps + taking my ab routine up a notch by incorporating weighted exercises,” she wrote about one of her workout tactics. “I can feel my muscles being challenged and am in tune with my movements.” According to the Mayo Clinic, strength and weight training help reduce body fat, preserve and increase lean muscle mass, and burn calories more efficiently. This has helped me feel so much better everyday.” She also gets regular blood work done. “So important to check your levels and know what’s going on in your body routinely!
