Outdoor Workouts

Van Outen is not fond of the gym, preferring to work out in the fresh air. "I've always been active thanks to my job, but some of my fitness is down to allocating time with a PT," she says. "I find the gym tedious and boring, so I always try to exercise outdoors as much as I can, weather permitting. In lockdown, I built a big assault course in the garden with lots of obstacles and I'd run round the circuit with my daughter Betsy. It was quite comical, but I like my workouts to be fun. I often set myself challenges or turn exercise into a game because that approach works better for me."

Oily Fish For Bone Health

Van Outen focused on her bone health after fracturing her shoulder. "When you're a woman of a certain age, your bone density can be lower, so I did lots of research on boosting my bone health," she says. "I upped my calcium intake and started eating lots of oily fish and, when I went back for an MRI scan, my surgeon said my bones had started healing very quickly considering my age, which I put down to eating all the right things."

Mindful of Alcohol

Van Outen cut back on her alcohol for the sake of her health. "I just really try to start to look after myself, so I cut down all my alcohol intake because I have to look after my voice," she says. "I try to eat really healthy, I start to take more vitamins. I had an injury on Dancing on Ice which was all publicized so I've had to really make sure to try and take all my fish oils and calcium because I cut out a lot of dairy from my diet about two years ago. But just regular exercise really, keeping myself busy."

Home Cooking

Van Outen loves home cooking, but enjoys the occasional takeout meal as well. "In the evenings, if I'm in London, a real treat for me is to have a takeaway sushi, but a lot of places have been closed so it's been a lot of home cooking as well," she says. "Sometimes, if I'm in a real rush or I'm absolutely shattered and I've had a long day a takeaway fish and chips will do!"

Walking and Cycling

Van Outen rediscovered a love for simple exercises such as walking and cycling during the pandemic lockdowns. "One of the things that did come out of lockdown is that I think as a family we tend to do more exercise together than we did before," she says. "Partly because Eddie's been at home and Betsy was off school doing home school, it meant that we set aside time every day to go for a really long walk or a cycle and actually we've fallen back in love with the exercises. I haven't cycled properly since I was a kid and I started loving cycling again."
