She Follows a Low-Carb Diet
Botas says she follows a low-carb diet, and loves how it makes her feel. "It's hardly a coincidence that avoiding carbohydrates – like sugar and bread – has a special effect, beyond just focusing on calories," says Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt, a Swedish medical doctor specializing in family medicine. "Carbohydrates, more than other foods, stimulate the release of the hormone insulin. And insulin is the body's main fat-storing hormone. This means that to lose excess body fat your number one goal should be reducing insulin levels. And to do this, the first and most important thing is to eat fewer carbs – a low-carb diet. For many people this is enough to reach their goal weight."
She Loves the Beach
Botas doesn't just model those bikinis for show—she really loves the beach. "When we imagine the beach, we can all easily feel the warm sand between our toes," says Dr. Heidi Hanna, a Fellow and Advisory Board Member for the American Institute of Stress. "In fact, the sensation of being barefoot (the foot actually has the most nerve endings per square inch as compared to the rest of the body) in nature has a grounding effect and is shown to boost your mood."
She Enjoys Wine
Botas enjoys the occasional glass of wine. "When it comes to alcohol, calories do count when trying to manage your weight [and] alcohol decreases your inhibitions, so you tend to eat more," says Keren Gilbert, certified nutritionist and founder and president of nutrition consultant firm, Decision Nutrition. "We are all entitled to a little relaxation, and fun. Alcohol can fit into a healthy lifestyle by keeping a tight, clean diet most of the time, drinking in moderation and knowing the facts."
She Walks Her Dogs
Botas is obsessed with her beautiful pups and loves taking them for walks. "There are many reasons to walk for exercise," says Ann Green, M.S., past heptathlon world athlete, yoga teacher and fitness studio owner. "Walking improves fitness, cardiac health, alleviates depression and fatigue, improves mood, creates less stress on joints and reduces pain, can prevent weight gain, reduce risk for cancer and chronic disease, improve endurance, circulation, and posture, and the list goes on…"
She Swims
Botas loves to swim. "Many people say that by simply being in the water they feel more relaxed and less stressed," says swimming instructor Emily Morrissey. "Regular exercise helps reduce anxiety and depression, as it releases 'feel good' hormones and keeps our brains working in a healthy way."
