Sensible About Diet

Mabuse always makes room for indulgences as part of her wellness regimen. "It was important for me to be like, 'Ok, I can have my chocolate and I'm still losing weight'. I've lost 14kg [30 lbs] and discovered the importance of self care," she says. "As a mum, I had to learn to take time to feel good for me before giving to my family and everything else that I'm doing. So it's important for me to say to myself, 'Ok, what are you putting into your body so that you have the energy you need to do all these other things?'"

Health Over Being Thin

Mabuse focuses on health over appearance, although she admits it isn't always easy. "As a professional dancer, my weight was a constant struggle, too," she says. "There's so much focus not just on winning, but what you weigh. A teacher once told me to lose weight when I was only 50 kilos [110 lbs]! Naturally, my body has changed since then, and my weight goes up and down. I'll never get to the stage where I think I look great, but I'm now much more compassionate towards myself. A healthy mind, body and soul is more important to being thin."

Working Out For Mental Health

Mabuse works out for the mental as well as physical benefits. "It helps me to feel positive," she says. "I work out and you get those endorphins. If you don't like working out, then just go for a walk. I think it's so important for your mental health. Obviously, if I'm in a positive vibe I have a different type of energy."

Hydration First

Mabuse makes sure to start the day with plenty of water. "It is important to me to eat a balanced and healthy diet. I keep noticing how easy it is and how good I feel about it," she says. "It is very important to me to drink enough to get my body going. In the summer I also like cold brewed tea."

5

Spending Time In Nature

Mabuse says she draws positive energy from being in nature. "There is mounting evidence, from dozens and dozens of researchers, that nature has benefits for both physical and psychological human wellbeing," says Lisa Nisbet, PhD, a psychologist at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, who studies connectedness to nature. "You can boost your mood just by walking in nature, even in urban nature. And the sense of connection you have with the natural world seems to contribute to happiness even when you're not physically immersed in nature."
