1. She Loves Hiking In Nature
Bascuñan hikes out in nature whenever she gets the chance. “Exercise in general can be a great stress-buster,” says Jill Suttie, Psy.D. “But what sets hiking apart from other forms of exercise is that it’s done outdoors in a natural setting. While other physical activities also rely on nature—for example, river rafting or backpacking—those often require more time and commitment than a simple hike and are less accessible to many people. Hiking can happen almost anywhere—from a city park or public garden to a mountain trail—and give you that dose of nature you need to stay happy.
2. She Cares About the Environment
Bascuñan is passionate about environmental issues. “The question we have as parents is: what kind of world do we want to leave our children?” she says. “I think that one great way is choosing schools which are concerned about the environment. Education is fundamental to sustainability. I really care about recycling, we recycle at home. But we decided to choose a specific organization in another municipality for recycling, to ensure that our waste is properly recycled.”
3. She’s a Dancer

Bascuñan loves to share videos of herself dancing on social media. “Dance, both in the Olympics and in life, seem to be under-recognized and under-appreciated in its potential benefits for health and mental health,” says H. Steven Moffic, MD. “Finally, however, the benefits of dancing are being scientifically researched. Benefits from a variety of studies involve our hearts, lungs, bones, and brains... Rhythmic dance parallels our heart rhythms and blood flow. Although dance seems to rev people up, it actually reduces stress and cortisol levels.”
4. She Loves To Travel
Bascuñan says that world travel has changed her life for the better. “Travel is very educational,” she says. “Travel broadens your mind, opens your heart and makes you more flexible and understanding to cultural differences. I once got the opportunity to travel in Africa (Mali, Benin, Ghana, Togo and Burkina Fasa), accompanying Ricardo Astorga. Ricardo is a wonderful person and a well-known Chilean host. The trip was the most rewarding experience of my life, as it allowed me to open up and experience another world. At that point in my life I was materialistic and loved luxuries, however traveling allowed me to turn my back on consumerism and make my life more simple.
5. She Plays Basketball
Bascuñan enjoys incorporating basketball into her workouts. "Fundamental movement skills such as [sprinting], vertical jumping and overhead throwing are very basic to physical movement", says Koco Eaton, MD. "Basketball promotes speed, agility, strength, power and endurance. It [has] also been shown to increase flexibility and motor coordination. As a result, basketball is uniquely oriented to improve fundamental motor skills that are shown to be beneficial in promoting general health.”
